2007 Season Report

Firstly I would like to congratulate everyone who played for the under 9 teams this season. 23 children played in the matches throughout the season which was quite an achievement considering we didn’t complete a match for 7 weeks mid season due to the poor weather. Following this the weather improved but the school holidays arrived reducing the number of children available. However, everyone who played all enjoyed the experience of playing for a club and represented Brooklands with pride.

This season started with a game at Cheadle where we needed a boundary off the last ball to win which we unfortunately didn’t manage. However, to be that close to a victory with a team who had never played together was incredibly pleasing. Romiley were our next opponents and we handed them a 9 run victory with our naivety in the field. We batted and bowled very well (we took 6 more wickets than them) but we gave them 24 runs in overthrows in the match, which gave them a victory they probably didn’t deserve.  Under 9’s cricket however, is about learning the game and improving as individuals and as a team and the pleasing aspect from this defeat was that in the next 6 matches we didn’t give away any overthrows.

I was aware that we needed to give as many children as possible games therefore, I tried to get double fixtures when we were playing at home which in most cases I managed to.

In the friendly game against Romiley we had a resounding 36 run victory due to some excellent batting performances. Due to the poor weather over the next 7 weeks we didn’t complete a game and by mid July we had only completed 2 games in the County League Fixtures and 1 in a friendly match. The lads were obviously chomping at the bit as we then won 3 out of our 5 final matches, all by convincing amounts. It really was an excellent team effort especially considering the lack of cricket we had played over the season.

Three more matches were played by our “friendly” side and despite getting outplayed in the final game by Prestbury, in the other 2 matches both games were only decided in the last over, giving the children good experience for next year.

4 batsmen, James Robinson, Rudraj Singh, Alistair Crossdale and Patrick Kertesz scored more than 50 runs and 4 bowlers, James Robinson, Rudraj Singh, Patrick Kertesz and Benito Jones took 5 or more wickets.

However, the most pleasing aspect was the major improvement in all departments especially the fielding areas where our catching and ground fielding were excellent towards the end of the season.

Many thanks must be given to Pete Staley, Mike Kertesz, Paul Battersby, Elliott and Mike Woodage, Max Lloyd and Amy Robinson for your assistance in coaching, scoring and help throughout the season, to all the parents for your continuous support over the season and especially to the players who have always played with smiles on their faces.
