2007 Season Report

A season when selection was always going to be difficult, due to key exams / studying absences was also hit by bad weather through the summer. In the end we did manage 8 matches and used a total of 27 different players.

Even allowing for any problems and inevitable weaken teams the performances were generally disappointing. Of the 3 games we won, 2 were against very weak sides and the 3rd against Marple required an excellent partnership when things had not been looking good between John Pearson (40) and Rob Conville (39).

Other highlights are
• Rob Holloway 39 in 33 balls against Stockport (also 44 in 23 balls Cheadle Hulme Lady bridge)
• Harry Routledge 43 in 17 balls against Stalybridge
• Mike Roberts 5 for 22 in 3.4 overs against Bramhall in the Plate Final
• Elliot Woodage 1 for 3 in 4 overs against Bramhall in the Plate Final
• Will Pidgeon 5 stumpings' against Bramhall in the Plate Final

Roll on next season when again no doubt study commitments will affect selection, but with at least 6 boys stepping out of the under 15 age group and only 2 going beyond 18 we have a bigger pool than ever of true under 18 cricketers. With a years extra experience we should reasonably expect a vast improvement and to seriously challenge at the top of the league.

Key areas that need real focus:

Bowling
• Simply the basics of bowling a good length and line. Far too often we have not bowled straight and the number of wides and no balls from seamers was unacceptable.

Batting
• The ability to rotate the strike with well judged quick singles is lacking. Too often balls are hit to fielders instead of dropped into gaps. Big hitting is nice but scores are built on singles.

Running
• Part of the batting but far too often batsmen and both ends are not alert to the possibility of a single. Backing up and loud positive calling is essential.

Fielding
• Catching of course but also throwing and backing up needs real improvement.
