2007
Season Report
On paper this particular cohort of young cricketers
did as well as the previous two, losing just three games, but it
would seem that a good season fizzled out into a disappointing end.
This was due mainly to the weather, a key injury, and a poorly
organised league competition.
It would seem, on reflection, that the season comprised two distinct
halves, with an excellent start and a disappointing end. In the
first half, we breezed through the group stage, winning all the
games that were playable, and coming joint top of the group with
Cheadle. At the same time, a very good cup run took us through to
the cup final, which was one stage further than two years before.
This comprised an excellent win against the odds at Elworth (batting
first, we are 24 for 5 off 9 overs at one stage), and an extremely
fortunate rain intervention at Macclesfield when 41 for 7 off 17).
However, two excellent wins in the rematch and the semi-final were
well deserved against two very good teams (who eventually were
winners and runners up in the county league). In these games we were
at our very best.
Unfortunately, the rain came and we played almost no cricket for 4
weeks, and when we re-started, we knew that Doug was to be absent
for the rest of the season. The Cup Final was the first match
without him, and an abject performance saw our first defeat of the
season. The championship phase of the league was badly affected by
the weather to begin with, and, with a change of timimg from
previous years, the final four crucial games took place in the
school holidays. For both ourselves and the opposition, fielding
anything like a decent side became a nightmare (u13s are unavailable
because they have their won competition) and the competition lost it
appeal compared with our valiant efforts two years before when we
came third. We finished mid-table with 2 wins, 2 defeats and 4
rained-off. The CCCL should seriously re-consider their decision to
delay the start to the season.
The structure of the side was very similar to previous years.
Against the better sides runs proved hard to get, although George
weighed in very well at no3. Dan proved an excellent opener and
captain, ably helped by Connor and Ollie, and on occasions, by Rob,
Luke and Paul. As before, bowling was our strength, with Jamie,
Ollie and Doug taking most of the wickets before Doug's retirement.
Alex and Mike made excellent contributions, and Caleb proved an good
replacement for Doug in the latter stages.
As this is the last year Pete and I are involved in running this
cohort (starting as U11 and U13s respectively), it is especially
important that we thank everybody who has helped down the years.
These include Brendan (scorer), Hash and Alan (umpires), and all the
parents who have supported the team and helped with lifts. Without
their help, the team couldn’t function. And finally, our sincere
thanks to all the players, who have made it a very enjoyable few
years. And we won far more games than we lost!
