2007
Season Report
First, we have to say that the weather this year,
probably the worst for 10 years, ruined all our plans of the season.
Within a few weeks of the season the rain hit us and all the games
that were planned and in the pipeline were cancelled as well as
training sessions. We were bitterly disappointed, as we know the
squad was, and by the time the better weather arrived we were left
with just a small number of games before the summer holidays
started. We hope next year the weather is better and we will work
hard to make up for this year and get players playing competitive
cricket.
Next year the year 6s i.e. this year's year 5s will still play under
11s and will be entered in 2 leagues and will be the oldest in the
squad and should get games as well as friendlies. For the year 7s
i.e this year's, year 6s they will link with some of the current
under 13s and compete in 2 leagues again giving them the opportunity
to play competitive cricket. Pete Whyley will join this section and
assist Hash Maitra and myself with the under 12s and 13s and the
current coaches/managers of the under11s.
The games we managed to have this year were of high quality and at
times pretty exciting, sorry parents for the stress endured by your
lads! The culmination of which saw Brooklands under 11s become SW
Manchester League CHAMPIONS over quality sides like Didsbury,
Timperley, Cheadle, Alderley Edge, Whalley Range etc. The lads
showed immense team spirit which saw the under 11s work as a true
team - not relying on a small group of players.
Some games must be mentioned; the penultimate game of the season v
Timperley at their ground on a sunny Sunday morning, a title decider
really. We were generous with extras - double our usual quota, which
had us batting on the back foot. We needed 3 to win in the last
over. We lost a wicket with the 1st ball which left Ben Atkinson to
come in, as he had previously retired on 25. Despite a pitch
invasion the previous over by a parent querying an umpiring decision
he settled at the crease to crack a no ball for 2, bar 1 more game
securing the league title.
We have to say goodbye to Harry Mallinder a player instrumental in
our successes this season as he has left the area - thanks Harry and
good luck.
No doubt the weather disrupted the excellent start to the season -
next year we will be developing more technical aspects to our game -
no more dropped catches, missing balls in the field, we have to have
quality forward defensive in batting and we will be a great squad.
We also entered the Cheshire league and came 3rd - a league we could
have easily won if half the games were not called off . Our opening
game in this league v Bramhall showed that you can play cricket in
the rain and the dark !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So to conclude, forgetting the rain - you finished off LEAGUE
CHAMPIONS no easy achievement. You played as a team with respect for
each other and your opposition - no super stars just a good team who
looked after each other - WELL DONE.
Thanks to some people who usually jumped in at last minute to help ;
Hash Maitra, Pete Whyley, Ian Bloomfield, Dave Vallance and to
others who helped. Two people who have given huge amounts of time, I
thank on behalf of the team are Richard Latham and John Owens.
Richard has been behind the scoring, collating stats and general
organising - Thanks Richard. John Owens has organised teams, managed
training and done more work than anyone will know - without him the
wheels would have fallen off mid May - thanks John. Massive thanks
to James and Robert Conville who generously dedicated so much time
coaching in the winter nets and during the season, resulting in
great developments for the player's games ,as well as managing to
squeeze in excellent GCSE results - thanks lads.
Thanks to the players for their commitment in games and training. We
hope to see you next year and in the winter nets. We will keep
playing positive and attacking cricket and having fun on the way.
Keep playing sport in the winter and stay fit.
CONGRATULATIONS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.
Dave Conville
